Chalfont St Peter Ventilation Shaft Engagement

High Speed Two (HS2) is the new high speed railway for Britain.

We, along with our contractors Align, will be delivering some of the main construction work in the Chalfont St Peter area. This includes the detailed design and construction of the HS2 ventilation shaft in Chalfont St Peter.

Have your say

We’d like to invite your feedback on the emerging design of the Chalfont St Peter ventilation shaft, which will help us to develop and finalise the plans. Please view our proposals on the associated exhibition panels before completing our quick online survey before 23:59 on Sunday 17 November 2019.

What is a vent shaft and headhouse?

A vent shaft, or ventilation shaft, is the vertical opening that connects the tunnels to the surface and open air. It regulates air quality and temperature in the tunnel, provides access for emergency services, and allows smoke to be extracted in the event of a fire.

The headhouse is the building on top of the vent shaft which contains fire control systems and the ventilation systems for the railway tunnels below.

Where will it be?

The Chalfont St Peter vent shaft will be located approximately 50 metres from Chesham Lane to the south of Ashwell’s Farm. You can find more details on the location on our exhibition boards.

What we need your views on

Please let us know your views and ideas on our proposals which relate to the four categories shown below. This includes letting us know your views on our top objectives and priorities for each category, the appearance of the headhouse, permanent structures and landscape design.

  • Landscape design
  • Ecology
  • Design of the vent shaft and headhouse
  • Construction
  • Once we've received your views and ideas

We will consider the responses and whether aspects of them can be incorporated into the proposed final design.

We will then host a follow-up event in 2020 to give information on the final design and show you examples where you've said you wanted something and how we've been able to take that into consideration through our designs or construction plans. We'll also share this information with you on the HS2 in Bucks and Oxfordshire community website.

If you have any questions or comments please contact HS2enquiries@hs2.org.uk or call 08081 434 434 and refer to "HS2 in Bucks and Oxfordshire".
